RECAP: The Carrie Diaries 1x6 - "Endgame"

It's Thanksgiving for The Carrie Diaries, a time for coming together and enjoying turkey, sweet potatoes, and ambrosia salad.. oh my! Being the first Thanksgiving without her mom, Carrie plans to keep the tradition of a perfect Thanksgiving Day meal alive, but things turn awry pretty quickly and it may not be as perfect as Carrie had hoped.

Turkey Time Never Sounded More Stressful:
Now that her mother has passed, Carrie is determined more than ever to keep Thanksgiving special just like her mom did. Carrie takes on the challenge of cooking the entire meal herself since a storm in Florida will prevent her grandparents from flying in and her grandmother from helping her out. While this alone sounds extremely stressful, her dad drops a bomb on her when he says he invited Carrie's new boyfriend George and his father Harlan over for Thanksgiving dinner! Carrie freaks saying that it is too soon and that she's not ready for him to know suburban Carrie. Sorry Care-Bear, it had to happen sometime right?
Just as Carrie is about to get her hands dirty, she finds her mother's recipes illegible due to grease stains and can't seem to find any normal cook books in the kitchen. Little sister Dorrit doesn't seem to upset about it, in fact she seems pretty determined not to eat Carrie's cooking. Could she be behind the missing cook books and wrecked recipes? We wouldn't put it past this mischievous rebel. Lucky for Carrie, Mouse saves the day by bringing over a huge stack of cook books and even says she'll help Carrie with the cooking.
George and Harlan come over and the only thing Carrie can focus on is making sure she comes off as cool as her Manhattan persona. That's why she starts to get paranoid when she sees Dorrit and George bonding during the football game her father and Harlan are completely consumed by. Too bad she doesn't have time to obsess over what Dorrit may reveal about Carrie to George, Mouse needs help in the kitchen and she needs it now!

The turkey is struggling to fit in the oven and plenty more food needs to be made. With some force, Carrie manages to stuff the turkey (pun intended) into the oven and decides to broil it on high so it will cook faster. Things are starting to look up for operation Thanksgiving, until Dorrit decides to leave the house. Carrie won't stand for this and follows her to the front yard where she catches Dorrit smoking pot. Furious, Carrie calls Dorrit out on wanting to sabotage Thanksgiving dinner...which Dorrit admits is true, but only because she didn't like Carrie trying to replace their mom. Completely understandable for a grieving teenager.
Back in the kitchen, smoke starts pouring out of the oven prompting everyone to join panicked Mouse. Having difficulty opening the oven door, Carrie has a complete meltdown in front of everyone saying that all she wanted was a perfect Thanksgiving and that she is upset that her dad didn't even notice how hard the day has been on Dorrit and Carrie not having their mother around for Thanksgiving. She finishes her rant off exclaiming to her dad that she is not mom and that she is his daughter and that he should be the one taking care of everything. To add the cherry on top of an overwhelming Thanksgiving, the oven explodes open setting off the fire alarm and just like that, the light fuse goes out.
Dorrit thanks Carrie for not telling their dad that she had been smoking pot and the two make up; Carrie apologizes for being crazy about Thanksgiving and Dorrit apologizes for trying to ruin the day. On the other side of the house, Carrie's dad sits alone in the dark thinking about what Carrie had told him. He realizes that he never should have let his teenage daughter try and cook such a large and difficult meal alone while he sat in the living room watching the game. Uh..we could have told you that one dad! With that, he comprehends that it is his responsibility to to keep the family together and not leave it all on Carrie's shoulders.

Maggie Faces the Future:

This year Maggie is spending Thanksgiving with her boyfriend Walt's pretentious family. Similar to 90's film She's All That, all Walt's father can talk about is Walt's future at Dartmouth because he himself had gone there. When the conversation focuses on Maggie's future, Maggie finally recognizes that she had never put much thought on her future before. The only thing she can think of is following Walt to college, but she brushes that comment off as a joke.
After dinner, Maggie confronts Walt about not being honest with his father and having the balls to say that he wants to attend NYU and not Dartmouth. While she may be concerned for Walt, her real aggravation is with herself and realizing that no one, including she, has thought about her future. She even admits that her earlier comment about following him to college was not a joke. Walt assures her that she is a young woman who is strong and confident and doesn't need to follow someone else's dreams, she should follow her own.
Maggie returns to her house to find her brother and his cop buddies drinking some beers and watching the game. In her bedroom, Maggie is joined by the cop she has been fooling around with behind Walt's back. His affectionate moves cause Maggie to have a huge epiphany. She can't keep doing things without thinking them through and recognizing how those decisions will affect her future and even her boyfriend Walt. She tells the cop she can't do this anymore and decides her new immediate goal is to respect herself. Maggie love, we couldn't be more proud of you.

Back at the Bradshaw's:
Since Thanksgiving dinner turned into an ultimate fail, George and his father decide to head home. George guarantees Carrie that Thanksgiving wasn't terrible and that he is totally fine with Carrie's freak out in the kitchen. Turkeys are no joke after all. As her boyfriend walks out the door, Maggie comes over and the three best friends reunite to fawn over Thanksgiving decor that Carrie didn't get to use. The evening is interrupted by a ring of the door bell. Well who could that be? Waiting outside Carrie's doorstep is...did you guess? Sebastian! Apparently his mother had bailed on him and left him alone for Thanksgiving. Poor little rich boy. He confides in Carrie and explains that his mother wasn't always like this. He says it wasn't until they had money that his mother completely changed and he didn't see the rest of his family anymore. According to Sebastian, he knew he could talk to Carrie and she would understand. He even gives the impression that he is regretting his decision to end things with Carrie. Well of course bucko! This is Carrie freakin' Bradshaw we're talking about!

Since they ended things, Carrie has chosen to take the high road and not make things awkward or weird between them. Could this be a possible game she is playing? Regardless, Carrie invites Sebastian inside and is able to convince her dad to allow him in the house. It's a Thanksgiving miracle! The night ends with good friends, candles, bean dip and fritos. Sounds pretty perfect to me.
